Moving from an A1 to a B1 level in English is a big step, but with the right plan and commitment, it’s absolutely achievable. This journey requires structured lessons, consistent practice, and a clear focus on IELTS preparation.
Here’s what’s involved when you do it with me.*
Minimum Hours Required
To reach B1, you should expect to commit at least 72 hours of class time.** This breaks down as 4.5 hours per week for 16 weeks. While I have helped learners reach this level in as little as 66 hours, having a structured 72-hour programme ensures solid progress.
In addition to class time, you’ll need to complete at least the same number of hours in homework and self-study each week. Homework is not just a box-ticking exercise - it is a critical part of the learning process. You will be expected to complete structured tasks that reinforce lesson content, including grammar exercises, writing assignments, reading comprehension tasks, and listening practice.
You will also need to dedicate time to expanding your vocabulary, reviewing lesson materials, and practising speaking through self-recordings or conversation exercises. This independent work ensures that you are constantly applying what you learn in lessons, strengthening your understanding, and making consistent progress towards your goal.
Once you have learnt the basics of each writing task, one of each will be expected every week – at least!
IELTS-Focused Learning
Throughout the course, we will build your grammar and vocabulary while preparing for the IELTS exam. The course is structured into five key areas, each covered over three weeks:
Writing Task 1 Exam – This will differ if you are doing the Academic or General exam; but will cover how to write effective responses.
Writing Task 2 Exam – Developing essay-writing skills, structuring arguments, and refining academic writing style.
Listening Exam – Practising IELTS listening tasks, improving comprehension, and learning strategies to identify key information.
Reading Exam – Learning how to tackle different question types, scan for answers, and manage time effectively.
Speaking Exam – Developing fluency, confidence, and accuracy in speaking tasks while practising common IELTS questions.
What You’ll Achieve
By the end of the course, you will:
Have a thorough understanding of the IELTS exam structure and question types.
Be equipped to achieve at least Band 4 or 5 in all areas.
Reach a B1 level, which meets the requirement for a UK visa application.
This structured approach ensures that every lesson builds towards your goal, giving you the skills and confidence needed to succeed.
* A thorough assessment will be needed before working with me to ensure we are a good fit and whether I think you can achieve this in the time stated.
**Some learners will need longer than the hours stated.
